One Day Series 2023

After the success of our One Day Series of rides over the last few years, we are pleased to announce that we will be running our One Day Series again for 2023. We will be bringing back our most popular ride from Stevenage to Cambridge as well as our our more challenging rides in the Surrey and Chiltern Hills.

These one day cycling events are a great way to get to know the people behind Tyco Travel.

Join other cyclists and enjoy some well-known routes, stop for refreshments to keep you refuelled and have fun along the way.

The Rides

Social Rides

These are social rides, they are not races. We recommend that you cycle within your ability and try to stay with your group, you'll have much more fun that way.

The number of cyclists for each rides will be limited. You will need to register in advance, as there will be no entry on the day. This is to help us plan the groups in advance and to keep the rides manageable on the day.

Self Supported

These are free group rides on open roads. You should be comfortable riding and navigating on roads with traffic.  Although there will other experienced cyclists on the ride, you will need to be self-sufficient. This means you should bring your own mini-tools, tubes and any spares to use in the event of a mechanical issue and know how to use them. We strongly suggest ensuring your bike is in a good working condition by having it serviced by a professional bike mechanic beforehand.

Bring a full bottle of water and snacks with you in case you need these in between stops. Drink plenty of water throughout the day.

FAQs

What clothing and & equipment should I take?

Check the weather forecast. If in doubt, take it with you! Be self sufficient, ensuring you have the necessary tools for roadside repairs. Essential kit to carry on the bike.

How do I check my bike is roadworthy for the ride?

In addition to maintaining your bike in a good condition (if in doubt, visit your local bike shop), you should always check that your bike is road worthy before setting off on a ride. Follow the M Check video for a helpful guide on how to check your bike.

Will the routes be signed?

No. To follow the route yourself, you will need to upload the route to your GPS navigation device before the event. Riders should ensure that they have the route available and that they are able to follow it. If you are not able to load the route yourself, please make the organisers aware so that they can make sure you are able to ride with someone who does.

The Route
The route will be available to download before the ride.

Do I need a GPS navigation device?

No. Whilst having your own GPS navigation device will make following the route easier, it is not essential to have your own GPS device. If you don't have a bike computer, or navigation device, you can download navigation apps such as Komoot or Ride with GPS to your phone and use those for navigation. There are many mounts that will let you attach your phone to your bicycle handlebars. If you are unsure about this, please do get in touch and we can advise you.

What is the format?

Riding in a small group with experienced cyclists You will need to be self-sufficient for the ride and each rider will need to carry spares and tools necessary to deal with punctures and roadside mechanicals. Experienced cyclists will be on the ride to offer support and help with light mechanical issues and signposting as well as advice on the roads and terrain.

What are the requirements for joining the ride?

A good level of fitness is required. If you are in doubt as to your fitness then we recommend you check with your GP before the ride. It is important that you do not try to ride if you are unwell or injured as this could put yourself and the other riders at risk.

What bike should I ride?

A road bike is probably the best choice, however, a hybrid (flat bar) bike may also be suitable, although these can sometimes can be heavier.

Do I need insurance?

As this is a free ride, the ride is not separately covered by our insurance. We advise all riders to have their own third-party liability insurance. One of the cheapest ways to arrange this is by signing up for British Cycling membership.

Is there any racing?
No.This is not a race. Cycle within your ability. Do not go riding off from the group. You may get lost and not be able to rejoin the group if you miss a turning.

Will there be mechanics on the route?

No. Experienced cyclists will be on the ride to give advice and help with some light mechanicals, but if your bike suffers a mechanical failure that cannot be fixed at the roadside, which means you cannot continue the ride, you will need to arrange to be picked up and taken home or to the nearest train station.

Are there water and refreshment stops on route?

We will stop during the ride for refreshments. You should bring a full bottle of water and sufficient snacks with you for the duration of the ride. Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Report any concerns or difficulties or if you are feeling unwell or unable to continue the ride to the organisers.

Will there be a sweeper vehicle available on the route?

No. Other experienced riders will be available throughout the ride to help you to keep up with the group. However, if you are unable to keep up with the average pace for the ride, which is approximately 13 - 14 mph, you may not be able to complete the full route in time and you will have to arrange to be picked up and taken home or to the nearest train station. We will help signpost you to the nearest suitable place.

What happens if the ride is cancelled?

Sadly, sometimes, despite our best efforts, these rides have to be cancelled. If we have to cancel the event for any reason, we will notify you by email.

What happens if I cannot attend the ride?

If, for any reason, you cannot join the ride, we would ask you to let us know by email or WhatsApp at least 24 hours before the start of the ride. This is so that we are aware you will not be joining us and we can make your place available to others on the waiting list
